The Feast of the Holy Family

The Sunday after Christmas is celebrated as the Feast of the Holy Family. When we contemplate the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph, we may be tempted to think that this family is very different from our own. And in many ways the Holy Family is unique. But in very fundamental ways the Holy Family is just like ours, and in fact we are included in Jesus’ extended Holy Family. In the Incarnation, Jesus became part of our family. Everybody loves a good, heartwarming, somewhat schmaltzy Christmas special. I remember growing up, most of the ones I saw on TV ended with some imperative to “keep the Spirit of Christmas alive in your heart” all year long. Of course they were usually pretty vague as to just what the Spirit of Christmas was.
